Walking in the Cemetery

We wanted to walk someplace different today, so we decided to go to the Riverside Cemetery in Asheville. It is a very old cemetery, and has been made into a park. Beautiful place all on hilly ground. There are 3 very notable persons buried there, Zebulon Vance, Thomas Wolfe, and William Sidney Porter (otherwise known as O'Henry). Some of the tombstones are so unique, and some are very old. 2 that caught my eye belong to nurses who served in WWI. We walked about 2 miles. Thought you might enjoy some pictures.

O' Henry
Folks place money on his stone as he was convicted of embezzlement and served time in prison in Ohio.

What I am Reading and my Current Quilt project.

In addition to quilting, hiking and golfing, I am also an avid reader. I bought a Nook recently, which makes it so much easier to read at will.

The book I'm reading now is called Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, by Harriet Jacobs. Bring born and raised in the north (Ohio), and having never experienced segregation, I find the books about slavery to be impelling. I read in the newspaper a while back that the high school in Asheville did not integrate until 1969, the year I graduated high school. Unbelievable. It is abhorrent to me how the slaves were treated. This book is a good read and very insightful. I recommend.

OK, now the quilting part. I have a HUGE tub of small scraps, and thousands of fabric pieces that are smaller than a fat quarter. I would like to thin out the smaller pieces so that I can better arrange my stash. SO, in the vein of Julie and Julia, I am starting at the top of the list of scrappy quilts at the Quiltville site maintained by Bonnie Hunter. I have made a couple, but I have started on the Basket Weave Strings. So far I have 20 blocks done. It goes fast. Here's a picture.

I'll keep you posted.

Checking in

First of all, thanks to all of you who voted for my watermelon quilt. It won!!! I get a 25.00 gift certificate from Shereesalchemy Very cool.

Had my first tomato sandwich with maters from the garden for lunch today. Nothing better!!! I wait all year for this, lol. Raccoons have helped themselves to our corn though, so not much of that this year. Oh well.

I'm going to drive to Ohio all by myself on Thursday for a family reunion. Plus, I will get to spend a couple of days with my great grandson, Carter. Will also be checking in with my daughter who had surgery yesterday. The trip came at the right time.

I finally bought a GPS, so will be playing with that on the trip. They are just sooo neat. I told Dave that most of my packing had to do with electronics. GPS, laptop, iPod, Nook reader, lol. Add my clothes and I'm ready to go. Oh, and my handy dandy ever-packed case with everything you need to make Dear Jane blocks. I'm staying at a Holiday Inn Express, so my grandson and his girl can come and swim, and I will watch the baby. I love staying at motels for some reason, I think somewhat because I can be alone in the evening and relax.

I feel weird not posting any pictures. Seems boring. Let me see if I can find a picture of something....be right back.

OK. Here's a picture of me, Dave and my great niece, Jordan, at Biltmore last week.

And what the heck, here's one of a little quilt I made for a swap on Quilting Bee.

Whew. I feel better.

Sun dresses

I made another sundress thanks to the generosity of Amy at Habitual Wordpress.

It was sized for a 12 month. The last one I made is way too long, so I have since hemmed it to be the same length, and reapplied the rick rack.

I also made a skirt from a tea towel, and some leggings from the sleeves of an old shirt.

I want to applique something on the skirt. I am having a really fun time making these.
