Catching up

It seems like there are not enough days in the week anymore. The weather just won't give up the warm temperatures so we feel obligated to get out there and take advantage of it. So, today is a hiking day. I think we're going to get another section of the Appalachian Trail done, as our current goal is to hike all the sections in NC, TN and GA before we retire, then we will vacation near other sections to maybe hike them all before we die, lol.

Last week we did a section from Hot Springs NC to the Deer Park shelter. It was a tough hike UP for about 3 miles, with beautiful views I might add, so the trip back was a bit easier. We met a really interesting hiker at the shelter. He had started at the northern terminus of the AT on July2, and figured he would be at the southern end in about 6 weeks. He was a young man with curly dark hair. I never asked his name, but we ate lunch with him and talked about his hike. Very cool! Then we turned around and went back. Oh yeah, there was a grave site with 2 headstones just off the trail near the shelter. Quite eerie. But what a nice final resting place. FYI, we want to be cremated and have our ashes spread from the top of the Art Loeb trail at Shining Rock wilderness. I read an obituary about a hiker which likened his life to a wonderful hike that came to an end. That's how I feel too! Except I'm hiking while wrapped in a quilt.

I don't know how to respond to comments made to my little posts, can somebody tell me how? But thanks to those of you who read it. Myra, I would love to take you out on my trail. And Cheryl, our section is about 0.8 miles. It's the shortest one I think, but the only one we could get. People in the Carolina Mountain Club are very active in trail maintenance it seems, lol.

You would think that hiking is my main activity, but truth be known, quilting is what I do! Right now I'm working on Christmas Ornamnents for a swap, and a few other projects, but I can't show them here or the surprise will be ruined. I will post pictures of all my swapped ornaments after it's over.

Hope everyone is having beautiful weather like us. Get outside!! It's good for the soul. And hang some of your quilts on the line to air. Then they smell wonderful when you snuggle up with them on the cool crisp fall nights.

We've adopted!!

No, it not a child!! We've adopted a section of the Mountains to Sea trail in western NC. It is the portion from Bull Gap to Ox Creek, and we are responsible for the routine maintenance of the trail. We do walk throughs and remove obstacles, keep the trail open and safe, and make sure the blazes are visible. I am so excited about this, as we hike the trails frequently and now feel like we are giving back a little. The pictures are of the beginning of our section, and of me sitting on a natural rock seat on the trail. We don't have alot of panoramic vistas, but there are a lot of wildflowers, and some nice views that are visible only in the winter. I wish I could get everyone out on the trail just once to experience the high you can get from nature. But then the trails would be too crowded, lol.

I've been doing alot of sewing too. Christmas is coming and I'm working on ornaments to swap with my quilting friends. Been playing golf too, but we won't go into that right now, at least until my score goes down significantly.
